City developing strategies for Monterey coastline

Over the last six months the City of Monterey has been busy working on an Existing Conditions Report. That report highlights all the areas along the shoreline that are vulnerable to future flooding.

“We’re looking at coastal erosion projections, we’re looking at coastal flooding and tidal inundationway out to 2060, so it’s a long term visioning document,” said Monterey Chief of Planning, Engineering and Environmental Compliance Kim Cole.

Projections for cannery row and El Estero Park are included in that document.

“The relationship between lake El Estero and the ocean, that area will continue to flood more and more over the years. That’s one of those critical areas we will have to look at. We also will look at Cannery Row. It’s built up above the ocean, but just looking at how the future of Cannery Row will evolve as well,” said Cole.

Now that the coastal study is done, and infrastructures at risk identified, the City of Monterey will be looking at strategies on how to move forward. A public workshop will be held Wednesday Night from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Monterey Youth Center.

“You’ll be hearing background information from our consultant team, but this is really an opportunity for the public to tell us what they would like,” said Cole.
