UPDATE: Salinas Police identify suspect killed during home burglary

UPDATE 2/8/2016 5:35 PM: A burglar killed during an incident at a home in Salinas last Thursday night is being identified by police.

Investigators said autopsy results show Antonio Ramirez, 20, of Salinas died as a result of a struggle with the homeowner on Cabernet Way.

Police said no charges have been filed against the father of three children who interrupted the burglary involving Ramirez and another suspect. They said it appears the father acted in self-defense.

UPDATE 2/5/2016 9:20 AM: Salinas Police have released more information about what happened during a deadly home burglary.

According to police, a 45-year-old dad and his three children came home to their house on Cabernet Way just before 7 p.m. Police said two males were in the process of burglarizing the home, and the two men confronted the family, eventually physically attacking the dad.

The fight spilled to outside the front door, and police said one of the burglars ran to a car parked nearby as the other tried to strangle the dad.

Police said the dad fought back to protect himself and his children and at some point during the fight, the suspect went limp. The dad went inside and called 911.

When officers arrived, the suspect was unresponsive. The suspect was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. His exact cause of death is still pending autopsy results.

After working with the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, the case is currently being investigated as one of potential self-defense, but also a homicide as a death occurred. The homeowner was not taken into custody.

UPDATE 11:30 PM: The Salinas Police Department is investigating a man’s death following a home burglary on the 1900 block of Cabernet Way.

Police said a homeowner arrived to a burglary in progress just before 7 p.m. Thursday. A struggle ensued between the homeowner and one of two suspects. Police have not confirmed who died.

No one is in custody.
