Tiburcio Vasquez Elementary School renamed

After years of controversy, Tiburcio Vasquez Elementary School has been renamed.

On Wednesday night, the Alisal Union School District Board of Trustees voted to have the school’s name changed to Monte Bella Elementary School.

In 2012, the decision to name the school after Tiburcio Vasquez sparked controversy across the country. This is because history books cited Vasquez as an outlaw and murderer.

The school is located in the Monte Bella development of east Salinas. It opened its doors for the first time in 2013.
