Summit looks to help people break away from their criminal past
Proposition 47 was a State initiative passed in 2014, as a way to reduce penalties for non-violent crimes while also giving felon’s a second chance.
“I think it’s an opportunity for people to move beyond the worst mistake they’ve ever made. If everyone was defined by the worst mistake they ever made we wouldn’t get anywhere,” said
Santa Cruz Public Defender Cassie Licker.
Over 11-thousand people in Santa Cruz County could benefit from proposition 47. Public defender Cassie Licker has one client going through the record clearance process right now.
“He’s been out now for years and trying to find a job. He’s gotten multiple commercial licenses, he’s gotten certified in a bunch of areas and he’s applied for six jobs now, and get beyond a minimum wage position,” said Licker.
Licker said the ramifications for having a criminal record not only affect the job search.
“It can affect you and your family as you’re trying to find housing. It can affect people trying to access benefits, professional licensing, and vocational opportunities. The list goes on,” said Licker.
Proposition 47 summit hopes to change that by offering legal services, and more than 40 resources.
“All the different areas where the collateral consequences can pop up, those organizations should be representing those different areas and helping people connect to resources,” said Licker.
