New project sheds light on popular stretch of Santa Cruz
Community members and leaders celebrated the completion of a new edition to the San Lorenzo River Parkway, giving it flair and appeal.
“The lighting is one of many steps to reconnect Santa Cruz to the Santa Cruz River Walk and the San Lorenzo River,” said Greg Pepping, executive director of the Coastal Watershed Council.
Now you’ll no longer have to ride or walk in the dark.
Forty energy efficient lights have been added to the path along the west levee between Laurel Street Extension and the Water Street Bridge.
“Gorgeous city Santa Cruz,” said Leveelies founder Janet Fardette. “It really needs to be enjoyed, by the world.”
It’s a beautiful spot with the river and wildlife.
But project coordinators say some people avoid it because they don’t feel safe.
“There were just horror stories of people telling us about being scared,” said Fardete. “One of my neighbors got robbed by somebody.”
Officials believe the 16-foot-tall tall lights, shining downward on the levee pathway, will discourage criminals
“This is something that I think opens it up, puts everything out there,” said California Secretary for Natural Resources John Laird. “Lights it up and I think will help.”
Officials believe the project will also bring more opportunities and growth for Santa Cruz.
“We want to integrate activities, active use of our river and art projects,” said Santa Cruz Mayor Cynthia Mathews. “Any number of improvements that continue to increase the attractiveness and appeal of the area.”
In addition to the lights, the project also includes a new fitness station and seating.
