Monterey County sees first fatal car accident of the year

The California Highway Patrol is investigating its first deadly crash of the year in Monterey County.

The crash involved three vehicles along highway 68 near Hitchcock Road outside Salinas on Jan. 6.

The CHP said the driver of a Lexus vehicle was driving eastbound on Highway 68. As it was attempting to make a left turn onto Hitchcock Road, it drove into the path of a second vehicle. As a result the Lexus spun out and was hit by a third vehicle on the westbound lane of Highway 68, officers said.

Four people were transported to a hospital, some with minor to moderate injuries. The CHP said a passenger in the Lexus, identified as Kimiyo Williams, 90, died of her injuries three days later.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the collision, according to the CHP.
