UPDATE: Deadly officer-involved shooting in Marina Thursday night

“It was a dynamic scene action was happening immediately.”

The Monterey County District Attorney’s office says around 8:20 Thursday night 58-year-old Rubie Elizabeth Gendreau-Whitaker called 9-11 saying she was being stabbed by her husband.

“Right on the face of this right now this appears to be unfortunately a domestic violence situation that has gone into a homicide,” said Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo.

Marina Police say they responded to the 3000 block of Independence Avenue where officers saw Rubie being assaulted by her husband of 10 years, 54-year-old Thomas Gendreau.

“The defendant is alleged to have had a knife,” said Flippo.

To protect her, investigators say one officer shot Thomas.

“This has been a traumatic event for us and certainly being responsible for taking somebody’s life is very traumatic for us,” said Marina Police chief Edmundo Rodriguez.

Both Rubie and Thomas later died at the hospital.

Now the D.A. is investigating the officer-involved shooting and are trying to interview potential witnesses.

“Obtained evidence, it’s being observed, it’s being cataloged and everything else,” said Flippo.

Investigators say they handle a lot of domestic violence cases.

Unfortunately sometimes when police intervene it’s too late.

“We and public safety have worked so hard to get the message out about how important it is to report incidents of domestic violence,” said Rodriguez. “But yet we still have these things happening so we need to work harder.”

Investigators did not share information on any criminal background and if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

Marina Police said this is the first officer-involved shooting for the department in at least nine years.

The officer who was shot was placed on paid administrative leave.

Thomas and Rubie’s neighbors say they are shaken up and that the couple were really nice people.
