Local LGBTQ community calls Caitlyn Jenner costume offensive
Every Halloween, there’s a few ‘pop culture’ costumes that some say just go too far.
This year, one of those costumes is the Caitlyn Jenner outfit, being sold online and in the pop-up store Spirit Halloween. There’s actually two options: Vanity Fair and/or Olympics.
Caitlyn Jenner made big waves this year after announcing she was becoming a woman.
While some argue the costume is all about paying tribute to the transgender movement, or poking fun, others say it’s simply disrespectful.
“It’s an absolute insult to transgender women everywhere,” transgender teen November Williams said.
Williams said wasn’t happy when she saw her hero turned into a Halloween character.
“They make a mockery and a character of what our lives and our identities are,” she said.
Spirit Halloween said it creates costumes based on public figures and celebrities, and that the Caitlyn-inspired costume reflects just that.
But some say they’re boycotting Spirit until the store removes the costume.
Jane Fisher is a parent of a transgender:
“I think every parents’ concern is that if it’s a celebration… great. We certainly celebrate our children, but I don’t think that we see that play out often,” Fisher said.
A Santa Cruz trans facebook group posted about the costume, labeling it “transphobic.”
“It is incredibly harmful for young, transgender girls,” Williams said. “If they see someone wearing a Caitlyn Jenner costume, [maybe] they’ll think being transgender is not okay.”
Caitlyn Jenner has said she’s not offended by the costume. But throughout her “coming out” movement, her message has been ‘don’t bully young transgenders.’
