Two people accused of vandalizing public display areas in downtown Santa Cruz

Two people were arrested and charged for tagging 33 areas in downtown Santa Cruz, according to police.

Officers said the vandalism was reported on Tuesday on Pacific Ave. near Soquel Dr. Police said square corners were painted on the sidewalk and were designed to imitate city authorized markings where items can be publicly displayed.

Police said the two people arrested were seen painting the unauthorized markings on surveillance video.

The Santa Cruz Economic Development Department is responsible for mapping out areas where public displays are allowed along Pacific Ave. Police said the cost to clean up the spray paint amounted to about $950.

Jonathan Keith McHenry was arrested and is accused of vandalism. Abbi Samuels was also arrested and charged with vandalism. Both were taken to the Santa Cruz County Jail.
