UPDATE 4/15/15: Arson investigators are working to find the cause of a deadly fire in Santa Cruz Tuesday morning to figure out whether it was an accident or foul play. The fire destroyed a shed behind a home near 17th Avenue and when crews got on scene they discovered a woman in the burning building.
Central Fire said a 56-year-old Santa Cruz woman was found dead in a shed behind this home where she lived on Alice Street. Crews cordoned off the home with crime scene tape as neighbors came out of their homes to see what was going on.
“What’s the flashing lights? Where’s the fire?” neighbor Bruce Wandmayer said.
The fire happened just a couple doors down from the Wandmayer’s house.
“It saddens me that somebody died probably before their time you know and that’s a shame,” Wandmayer said.
Investigators talked to neighbors and tried to gather more information about the victim.
“This is really going to be a cooperative investigation between ourselves and the fire investigators as well,” Lt. Kelly Kent said. “I would categorize it as suspicious only because there was a deceased person found inside a small shed and you know the shed is burned to the ground,” Kent said.
They questioned a man who also lives at the home, but wouldn’t say what the relationship was between the two.
Kent said the shed was made of wood and appeared to be used for gardening tools — structure that likely ignited quickly.
“I’m sorry for their families or the people that know them, because they are real people,” Wandmayer said.
Investigators will have to wait for the autopsy to determine how the woman died and whether or not it was before or after the fire.
