Making a Difference: Youth on Course

Pedro Ortiz can tell you the exact moment he fell in love with the game of golf.

“We had a field trip and they encouraged us to go to the golf course and a coach introduced me to the game and it’s core values. I really developed a passion for it, deep inside.” said Youth on the Course Member, Pedro Ortiz.

10 years later and Pedro is now a member of Youth on Course.

“What we found was kids who were on the golf course were typically healthier and doing better in school. It’s just a positive place for them to be” says Executive Director for Youth on Course, Adam Heieck.

The non profit organization is part of the Northern California Golf Association. Through local donations from community members and businesses, the organization provides all youth with affordable course access, internships and college scholarships.

“What we really started doing was subsidizing rounds of golf for kids so they would never pay more than five dollars. Being a part of this organization helps kids realize that they can achieve their goals and that college is a possibility” says Heieck.

Youth on Course also helps students develop work experience as a caddie and skills to build their resume. It’s the support Pedro says will fuel his education.

“I’ve learned core values including being confident, having patience, being responsible. I will use all these life skills when I’m in school, work or with my family” says Ortiz.

Making a difference by providing the drive for young people to better their future.
