Dorothy’s Place leak causes major damage, still trying to feed all in need

Dorothy’s Place is frantically trying to feed at least 300 people a day in need in Salinas’ Chinatown area after their kitchen was heavily damaged.

Last week, staff discovered that hidden plumbing leaks ruined the floors in the kitchen and dining room to the point of compromising safety.

Once the floor was pulled up, they also found out the 20-year-old walk-in refrigerator was also damaged and has to be replaced. That will cost more than $30,000.

The stove, ovens and walk-in cooler have been removed so staff cannot cook, refrigerate or wash dishes.

Many of the volunteers are bringing ingredients for sandwiches and even some small hot items.

The repairs are not expected to be done for about a month.

Dorothy’s Place says it will continue to do what it can to feed the 300 plus people a day, however it can use all the help it can. If you want to help see the list of options below:

A donation of disposable dinnerware. You can drop it off at Dorothy’s Place at 30 Soledad Street, Salinas, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.
