Monterey County updates Rooster ordinance
The Monterey County Board of Supervisors has passed an updated rooster ordinance. The new ordinance requires breeders that have five or more roosters in the unincorporated areas to obtain a permit.
In the last two years, county leaders say they’ve seen an increase in those who breed roosters for fighting. The ordinance passed 3-2.
The county has followed through with it’s initiative to create a proactive program, to actually actively seek out or prevent people who breed roosters for the purposes of cockfighting.
Tuesday the environmental health bureau and animal services presented a draft of the “rooster keeping ordinance.”
Two years ago a similar ordinance was proposed. This time the Supervisors approved the ordinance.
This ordinance will exempt 4-H clubs, schools, and poultry breeders.
