Charter school denied in Salinas

The Monterey County Board of Education voted Wednesday to uphold an earlier decision by the Salinas City Elementary School District Board to deny an application by Gilroy-based Navigator Schools to open a K-6 charter school in the Salinas City Elementary School District.

In October, the Salinas City Elementary School District Board rejected Navigator’s initial application.

Wednesday the Monterey County Board of Education considered Navigator’s appeal of the decision.

A 22-page staff report recommended denial of the appeal, based on numerous concerns over the application’s compliance with the California Education Code.

After hearing public comment from 30 parents, teachers and community members, the Monterey County Board of Education voted 6-0 to reject Navigator’s appeal.
