Watsonville police could be getting second K-9

The Watsonville Police Department could soon be getting a new addition to its force to help solve some of the most dangerous crimes. But this fighter stands on four legs.

Earlier this year, the department had two K-9s, but had to retire one of them because of old age. Now, they’re hoping to fill that gap, but need the public’s help to foot the bill.

The K-9s are able to pick up a scent to search for suspects and lead officers to drug stashes. The specially-trained dogs are deployed during high-risk situations and often serve as an alternative to deadly force.

“So, for instance, searching for a robbery suspect that just ran from a car stop. The dog is going to pick up a scent from wherever that suspect left and hopefully be able to track us to that suspect quicker than just having regular officers,” said Officer Brian Fulgoni with the Watsonville Police Department.

It’s why Fulgoni said the department wants to bring on a second K-9. The city can’t afford the dog on its own, so police set up a GoFundMe account in hopes of raising $25,000.

“Right now only half the week is covered by the police canine so that second canine will help supplement the other half of the week,” Fulgoni said.

He said the department’s current K-9 Ellex has been instrumental in helping police locate different suspects throughout the year.

Once the department raises the money it needs, both the K-9 and the officer have to go through training. The handler and the dog also need time to bond.
