Santa Cruz Mission hosts 2nd annual Mole and Mariachi Festival Saturday

Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks is hosting its second annual Mole and Mariachi Festival Saturday to benefit the Santa Cruz Mission.

The festival takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Santa Cruz Mission Adobe State Historic Park. Admission is free and a free trolley will offer service from downtown Santa Cruz.

Two bands — Mariachi Gilroy and Mariachi Sonora — will headline. The festival will also feature mojigangas, brightly painted giant puppets that date back to the middle ages in Spain.

Local chefs will prepare mole saucesthat will be judged by event attendees and by a panel of local celebrity judges. Mole tasting kits will be available for $10.

Competitors will include:

El Jardin
El Chipotle
Lidia’s Taqueria
El Chino
The Kitchen at Discretion Brewing
Vivas
Maya Mexican Restaurant

Awards will be bestowed on the best sauces in two categories: Peoples’ Choice and Judges’ Choice.
