Prisoner convicted of murdering cellmate at Salinas Valley State Prison

A Salinas Valley State Prison inmate with a significant history of violent assaults has been convicted of killing his cellmate and attacking other inmates.

David Maurice Gomez, 48, was convicted of first-degree murder for the brutal 2005 attack that killed his cellmate at SVSP, Franklin Feliz. He’s faces a maximum sentence of three consecutive life sentences.

Feliz was strangled, beaten and slashed, his voice box smashed and his face caved in.

Gomez also was convicted of two attacks on inmates in 2009. In February 2009, he attacked another inmate while attending a court hearing in Monterey County Superior Court for Feliz’ murder. Gomez slashed the other inmate’s neck with a piece of razor blade he’d smuggled into the court. The victim needed seven stitches.

In the second incident, Gomez stabbed another inmate in April 2009 with a piece of eyeglasses that he’d sharpened into a weapon. It occurred while the two were receiving dental care at the prison.

At the time of the 2005 and 2009 attacks, Gomez was serving a prison sentence of 91 years and eight months for convictions of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation and burglary out of Los Angeles County.

Earlier this month, prison officials said Gomez stabbed a corrections officer at the prison in the head repeatedly using a homemade weapon.

Gomez has not yet been convicted of charges stemming from that incident.
