Deadline approaches to file candidacy paperwork

The Santa Cruz County Elections Department is remind people that the deadline to file candidacy papers is August 8, 2014.

However, if the incumbent for any office who is eligible for re-election does not file by that Friday, the filing will be extended until 5:00 p.m. August 13 for anyone other than the incumbent to file.

Several contests on the ballot remain open, including city council seats, school board trustee positions, fire, water, and park district directors and port commissioners.

So far, only 50 candidates have qualified to run for one of the 110 seats up for the election this November.

If you’re interested in running for City Council, you mist contact the appropriate City Clerk’s office.

Candidates must submit a 200 word Candidate’s Statement of Qualifications. All those interested in candidacy are encouraged to get a “Candidate’s Handbook” from the Elections Office.
