Monterey County nonprofit collects 9,600 pairs of shoes

The Gateway Center of Monterey County collected 9,600 pairs of shoes through a recent fundraiser.

The shoes were sent to impoverished people in the Caribbean who will fix/refurbish the shoes and sell them – creating their own microenterprises.

Gateway received 40 cents per pound of shoes, which came to a total of $4,127.20 – that goes directly to services for Gateway’s intellectually disabled clients.
