What’s in the water at Carmel-by-the-Sea?

CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The American Water Works Service Company, Inc. confirmed to KION Tuesday that they are flushing hydrants in Carmel-by-the-Sea through Friday.

American Water said that they notified customers around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, which occurred about 15 minutes before they began the flushing. They said the event is expected to be complete at 5 p.m. on August 30.

"Flushing also allows us to test and maintain fire hydrants," wrote the announcement on their website. "When crews are working in your area, you may notice reduced pressure or discolored water."

Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the service days, American Water says that customers can experience discolored water, but to run water on cold at the lowest level for about three to five minutes until the water clears.

The company also warns that if discolored water persists, not to do laundry.

"In keeping with American Water’s focus on safety for both customers and employees, please do not approach our crews while they work," said American Water, mentioning that the goal of the hydrant flushing is to provide people with water system maintenance as well as high quality water service.
