Seniors aged 70 and older now eligible to renew driver’s license online until further notice

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KION) California seniors will not have to visit a Department of Motor Vehicles office to renew a noncommercial driver's license until further notice.

Drivers aged 70 and older whose licenses expire beginning March 1, 2020 and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic are eligible, and this includes REAL ID renewals.

The DMV said the option will be available until California's State of Emergency ends or until Gov. Gavin Newsom's Executive Order temporarily waiving the requirement for an in-person visit is modified.

The agency hopes that by allowing seniors to renew online, they will be able to avoid or delay a visit during the pandemic. The DMV had already provided yearlong extensions to senior drivers with noncommercial licenses set to expire between March and December 2020, and those who received extensions are also able to renew online.

Drivers under the age of 70 also have more eligibility for renewing their noncommercial driver's licenses online or by mail during the pandemic. Noncommercial learner's permits set to expire between March 2020 and May 2021 can be extended for six months or to a date 24 months from the date of application.
