New Hampshire lawmakers consider multiple bills targeting transgender students and athletes

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire lawmakers are considering multiple bills that would ban transgender athletes from competing in school sports that align with their gender identities. The Senate Education Committee held a public hearing Tuesday on one of the bills, which would also regulate the bathrooms transgender students can use at school. Lawmakers heard from two former athletes who took opposite positions on the bill. One woman, a former badminton player, argued that transgender athletes are taking spots on teams away from other players. The other woman, a record-setting track and field athlete, said competing against boys enhanced her experience. At least 20 states have approved some kind of ban on transgender athletes in K-12 or collegiate sports.
