Eco-friendly Sand City resort stalling construction
The construction of a massive beach-front resort coming to Sand City has been put on temporary hold. Developer, Ed Ghandour, said the Monterey Bay Shores Eco Resort is the largest project on the California coastline.
The future site of the resort was bustling with construction workers just a few months ago, but now — odd silence. Now that workers have left the site, some residents are wondering what is going on.
Ghandour said that since its groundbreaking in February 2018, he has been working on refinancing the project. He noted that this process is taking longer than expected, but wants to see it done right.
Sand City Mayor, Mary Anne Carbone, said she is well aware of concerns. “We have been waiting. It is a big project. It is a 600 million estimated dollar project. So, of course, that is going to take some work putting financing together,” said Carbone.
Ghandour said that finding the proper investors for a project of this size is not simple. The idea behind the resort is to provide an eco-friendly experience for its guests. He said this will include features such as green roofs, an in-kitchen garden, and water recycling capabilities. Ghandour mentioned that these amenities come at no small cost.
Ghandour said that since the groundbreaking they have started to level the dunes and install a waterline. He said that he plans to see this project through. It is their goal to pick back up with construction in March 2019, in order to be ready for their grand opening in late 2021, early 2022.
