Mount Toro child development center groundbreaking
Tuesday Mount Toro High School announced the groundbreaking for a new child development center on campus.
The new building will provide meals for students and an extended teen mothers program.
Fifteen students now participate in the child care center at the alternative learning school.
“They’re able to come to our campus drop off their babies at the child development center and then they go to class all day,” Principal Gloria Chaidez said.
While the students are learning in the classroom their children can also be growing.
“The little babies are also introduced to lots of skills, reading, songs playtime,” Chaidez said.
The multi-purpose building will also include a full kitchen and cafeteria.
Especially during certain times of year this added space will help students.
“On rainy days instead of being in the classroom now we’re going to have somewhere where we can all be together to eat our lunch and have fun,” Junior Jennifer Murillo said.
City officials say the four million dollar project is necessary.
“Students that need classes, need facilities at an adult level and we’re ready to help them,” Steve McShane Salinas City Councilman said.
This is the first time a permanent building will be added to the campus of Mount Toro high school.
Right now the plan is for construction to be complete by the end of next July.
