Monterey Bay Aquarium unveils life size Blue Whale art installation made of trash

An 82 foot long blue whale made from discarded plastic is making a big splash in the Bay Area.

The life-sized blue whale art installation will be featured in San Francisco at the heart of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Crissy Field in the Presidio.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium said it wanted to bring awareness to the issue of ocean plastic pollution.

“A blue whale can weigh about 300,000 pounds – the approximate amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean every nine minutes,” said the MBA.

Artists, Joel Deal Stockdill and Yustina Salnikova are finishing up the art installation assembly before it is unveiled to the public on Saturday, October 13.
