DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — There haven’t been any new reported outbreaks of bird flu in Iowa since May, but Iowa’s egg producers are still trying to make up for the loss of over 13 million birds.

Iowa egg production in May was down 28% from where it was last year. That’s according to a new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Iowa hens produced 913 million eggs last month. In May of 2021, that number was closer to 1.3 billion.
