Touring the massive mudslide in Big Sur
A large stretch of Highway One is now under more than 40 feet of rock and debris in Big Sur.
KION got a look at the massive Mud Creek slide from the ground Thursday.
On Saturday night, the hillside gave way after being hit hard by winter storms and five million tons of debris slipped into the shore.
“This slide is actually about a quarter mile in length and it is composed of five different slides in one. Out of the five slides, four came down,” Susana Cruz with Caltrans said.
Four homes near the slide were not damaged and Caltrans workers are in constant contact with those residents to make sure they are safe.
Crews said Mud Creek is still active and they don’t know when the road will reopen.
“The locals have told us, in 83 with the El Nino, there was a big slide at Julia Pfeiffer burns, just north of that and there were five million tons then, and the road way opened in 14 months. We are not saying it is going to take 14 months, we are just saying this is a little bit more, and it could take approximately a year,” Cruz said.
Caltrans is going to wait for the slide to stabilize before assessing the damage. So far, there is no estimate on how much repairs will cost.
