SPCA rescues more than 90 rabbits, now dozens are ready for adoption

UPDATE: 5:30PM 05/24/17: Kids love the Easter bunny for the holiday, but when it comes to caring for the animal, many Central Coast families take on more responsibility than they’re ready for. And that’s lead to a big number of rabbits being left at the SPCA.

The SPCA for Monterey County says they usually see quite a few bunnies turned over to their care in late April or May, but this year, they received a record number.

91 of these furry little guys and gals were either turned in or rescued for neglect or abuse. In fact, of those 91, about 40 of them are from two different rescue operations from a single house in Salinas. Now, the SPCA of Monterey County is looking for help as more than 60 bunnies still need homes.

“You can also come in and spend some time with them, get to know them as individuals and see who might fit with your family. Rabbits can make wonderful pets. These guys have been through a lot but they have a lot of love to give,” said SPCA for Monterey County Community Outreach Coordinator, Beth Brookehouser.

Rabbits are actually the third most common pet in the United States behind dogs and cats, and like our canine and feline friends, they have very distinct and unique personalities. Many owners say that some end up acting like dogs, wanting to play and follow their human all around the house.

The SPCA for Monterey County is looking to adopt these bunnies out to loving families, but they’re also looking for donations and volunteers.

ORIGINAL: Since Easter, the SPCA for Monterey County has rescued and sheltered 91 rabbits. These include 54 rabbits rescued by SPCA humane officers and 37 brought to the SPCA by owners who could no longer care for them.

The SPCA has found placement for 27 of the rabbits but is still caring for 64 rabbits of all shapes, colors, and sizes. Currently seven of these rabbits are available for adoption, with over 20 almost ready for adoption.
