Recent storms are finding a way to bring the community together
George Beechum said it was pretty scary waking up in Salinas Friday morning, where wind gusts reached up to 70mph. He woke up to a massive eucalyptus tree blocking Crazy Horse Canyon Road, which many drivers were using as a detour to get through to Highway 101.
“This is the worst I’ve seen it on this road in the 30 or so years I’ve been here in this area,” said Beechum.
Instead of standing around, Beechum decided to take matters into his own hands. He grabbed his chainsaw and went to work, trying to clear at least one lane of the road.
But it wasn’t just his chainsaw, shortly after several others joined in. Some of them complete strangers, all working to clear the road and help those stuck in traffic get to their final destinations safely.
“This is like Oklahoma weather, tornadoes and trees down all over,” said Kennett Love, who was trying to get to 101 south.
While recent storms have battered and damaged the Central Coast , there’s no dampening the spirits of some.
“I think people need to come together and do stuff like this,” said Danny Radel, Salinas resident. “Our law enforcement can only do so much.”
