Alcohol ok in California beauty salons and barber shops
California beauty salons and barber shops are now able to offer more than just esthetic services to clients. Now, they can serve beer and wine. It’s all due to a new 2017 law signed by Governor Jerry Brown. It allows them to legally serve alcohol without a license from the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control. There are some rules they have to follow though. Signature Day Spa in Carmel says it’s always allowed and welcomed customers to bring alcohol on their own, but now the spa can serve it. Assembly Bill 1322 – also known as the “Drybar Bill” – made it legal. Salon owner Tanya Montgomery wasted no time providing the service. “I think it’s good I think we’ve been waiting for it for over 20 years. My clients have always brought in their own wine or champagne for their parties and now we can offer local wines,” said Montgomery, owner/educator at Signature Day Spa. Jason Kampf was visiting the spa from Virginia. He says California’s new law is a nice addition to an already pleasant experience. “This is a relaxing atmosphere and you know one or two drinks is a nice way to compliment some of the services and relax a little bit,” said Kampf. In order to provide the service without a license, beauty salons and barber shops have to meet certain requirements. Businesses can not charge for drinks. They can not serve more than 12 ounces of beer or six ounces of wine by the glass. Beer or wine can only be provided during business hours and not after 10 PM. Montgomery says she has no plans to over-serve and doesn’t expect her customers to want more than what’s legal. “People that come into the spa are here to relax and detox,” said Montgomery. “So trying one glass of wine or trying a certain grape while they’re in here to kind of set the stage for where they want to go tasting if they’re here for one day, three days, some are here for a week. It helps.”
