Limited time remaining to recycle Christmas trees for free
It’s beginning to smell a lot like Christmas at the Monterey Regional Waste Management District.
Director of Communications & Sustainability Jeff Lindenthal “people are getting back to business and we see a mountain of trees come in after the holidays,” said Director of Communications & Sustainability Jeff Lindenthal.
The recycle facility estimates they’ll see upward of 20,000 Christmas trees just this year.
“We’re seeing trees from Big Sur all the way to Moss Landing,” said Lindenthal.
Those trees will eventually make it back into the ground.
“Recycling your Christmas tree is like giving your earth a gift after the holidays. We grind them up into mulch. That mulch becomes the raw material for making compost. That compost goes back to local farms and landscapes,” said Lindenthal.
For those living in Western Coastal Monterey County try to get your tree curbside by this weekend, or you can drop it off for free through the end of the month. In Salinas that service is offered through January 20th.
“All the trees need to have everything removed, all the decorations. Make sure the stand is off. In King City, Soledad, and Greenfield you can leave them on your curbside until January 13th and also unincorporated Monterey County,” said Recycling Coordinator Jenny Mitchell.
