Driver killed in New Year’s crash

A Redwood City man was killed in a single vehicle crash early Sunday morning near Castle Rock State Park in the Santa Cruz mountains.

The California Highway Patrol reported Monday that the 26-year-old victim, whose name was not initially released, was driving a 1989 Toyota pickup truck on a private dirt road late Saturday night when he lost control and was ejected from the truck.

Friends drove him to the property’s entrance at 23981 Highway 9, where emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead early in the morning of Jan. 1, 2017. A 32-year-old male passenger was not injured.

An investigation is underway. The CHP reports that alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.
