Watsonville students use science to save kittens

Anew program is giving kids the opportunity to learn new skills in the science and tech fields.

Each week students at the Migrant Academy of Knowledge and Engineering program have to use everyday tools to solve a problem.

This week they had to make a machine to save a kitten that fell in a sewer.

Program coordinators say it not only teaches them about science and math but also opens up opportunities for them.

“The tech fields are predominately male and white and so we want to provide students with skills that they can use in universities and they’re future careers,” said Patricia Unruhe, Migrant Education, Region XI migrant science coordinator.

All of the students families are farm workers and this is a way to give them experiences outside of school.
