Fishermen wrap up two day Salmon fishing
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) -- After a long hiatus, salmon fishing opened back up for a short window, allowing many recreational fishers to head back out to sea. David Everett, a recreational fisherman, says, “we haven't been able to fish for salmon for a few years now, so it's good that we got to catch a few.”
For the first time since 2022, many fishermen around the Santa Cruz harbor had the chance to cast their lines, looking to catch some salmon. Many said they enjoyed being out, while some others were disappointed it was only for a few days.
Everett added, “this is the first time I've ever fished every single day of the salmon season, yesterday and today.” Others, like Garett Presley, were disappointed with their results in the short window. “I didn't score today. We only had one day available for us to go fishing on my schedule. Two days to fish for the season is kind of a disappointment really.”
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced they would be opening salmon fishing for two days, setting a harvest limit of 7 thousand salmon.
“This was a lot like past salmon seasons. I mean, the fish quantity was about the same. Some boats get their fish real early. Some boats never get any fish at all, but I mean it's just enjoyable to go catch,” said John Clay. Other fishermen like Ben Chates said, “it was exciting to have the opportunity to go out. Two days are better than no days. So yeah, it was good to be out there trying.”
For Louis Peracci, fishing in general has been a livelihood. He says he was able to catch three salmon yesterday, but the best part was enjoying the time with his family and seeing the future generation of fishermen.
“I've been fishing for salmon since I was 3 inches tall. It's amazing. It's like a livelihood here. It's fantastic.” He adds, “I've taken, yesterday I took my grandson. So it's good to see different generations go out.”
Fish and Wildlife says if the limit is not reached in these two days, the fishery will open again at the start of July. Additional dates will be available in August until the summer harvest is attained.
