Firefighters concerned about fireworks during dry conditions
Firefighters are concerned about fireworks this year because of the dry conditions.
Watsonville will start selling fireworks on July 1 st and firefighters will be increasing patrols in the area through July 11 th .
The city only allows safe and sane fireworks. Safe and sane fireworks don’t explode or fly more than 6 feet in the air and these fireworks will be sold beginning July 1 st at 9 a.m. to July 4th.
They can only be lit by adults.
Minors who light safe and sane fireworks can be fined $1,000. Adults who give fireworks to kids can also be fined.
Firefighters are also reminding people to dump the fireworks in a bucket of water after they use them, but not everyone follows that rule.
“Later that night or early in the morning we do get typically a few trash can fires and dumpster fires,” said Tom Avila with the Watsonville Fire Department.
Watsonville firefighters hope the public will be on their best behavior, but they are asking anyone who sees people with illegal fireworks to call 911 right away.
“There is nothing that ruins a holiday like an accident or a fire and so we just always hope that people are safe and responsible,” said Avila.
Fireworks go on sale on June 28 th in Salinas.
