Salinas hires new firefighters, rebuilds after budget cuts
It’s a busy time to be a Salinas firefighter. On top of preparing for the summer fire season, the department is also rebuilding its team.
The department has been understaffed since budget cuts after the recession. But that’s about to change.
An academy with eight recruits is underway.
“They are getting us one step closer to being where we should be for a city of our size and complexity,” Salinas Fire Battalion Chief Brett Loomis said.
By this time next year, the department will be even closer, thanks to federal grants and the expectation of money from Measure G.
Three more academies are planned, and a recent academy just graduated in February. Those then-recruits were the first in three years.
The department isn’t just looking for people who can lift 75 pounds, or drive a fire truck.
“It’s not how can I benefit, it’s how can I benefit others,” Loomis said.
Department leaders are looking for people who follow directions, pay attention to detail, and most importantly, are invested in the community.
“It’s a great feeling to serve and protect in the community you grew up in,” recruit Nolan Cutler, who grew up in Prunedale, said.
