A huge law enforcement operation targeting multiple locations on the Monterey Peninsula, all aimed at reducing gang violence.

Authorities said it stemmed from a homicide last month and the people arrested Wednesday have allegedly retaliated in some way for that death. Five locations were searched in Marina, Monterey and Seaside. Officers said it was all a part of the Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Team’s mission to arrest specific people who belong to or associated with the Crips gang.

They said after Johnson was shot and killed in March by suspected Norteno gang members, suspected Crips gang members retaliated with crimes like assault, aggravated battery and shootings on the Peninsula, all targeting Nortenos or Latinos in general. Police said they had to bring in the Monterey County SWAT team in to help for back up.

“In this case, out of those locations, three locations were considered extremely dangerous because the location of weapons and because the people being arrested have been involved in shootings, wanted for murder. So hence why the SWAT team got called out,” Marina Police Commander Roberto Filice said.
