Mustangs head football coach fighting for his job

Brian Boyd has been coaching sports in Gilroy for 13 years.

For the past five years, he’s been with Gilroy High School; the last three spent as their head coach.

It’s a job and lifestyle he loves, but one he’s suddenly fighting to hold onto.

“I was asked to resign from the head coaching position, which was completely a shock,” Boyd said.

But he insists he was really fired.

“I’m not willing to resign. Me saying I’m resigning is leaving the kids. I’m not going to say I’m leaving the kids.”

Boyd says he doesn’t know why administrators want him gone; especially when he was trying to turn the athletic department around.

“One of the questions I did ask in the meeting was that if we would have won more games, would we be having this meeting, and they said no.”

News Channel 5 reached out to the high school for answers, but never got a call back.

Boyd said if administrators change their minds, he’ll be back in a heartbeat. That’s how important the Mustangs are to him.

Now — his players are showing him how important he is.

Senior field hockey player Katrina Carter is leading the fight. She’s drafting a petition to save his job. It includes both teacher and student support.

“It’s really overwhelming. Not that I lost the head coaching position, just the huge amount of support this small town (has). Which is why I came here. (Everyone) is tied to supporting someone when they’re down.”

Boyd said he was already offered a coaching position for Gilroy’s rival team. Still, if administrators come back and say this is a misunderstanding, he said he’ll stick with the Mustangs.

The petition is expected to start circulation on Saturday, and will also be posted online.
