Urban and small stream flood advisory for all of central coast issued

UPDATE 12/12/14 9:38a.m.: The National Weather Service just issued an Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for Monterey, San Benito, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties until 9:00p.m. Friday.

The NWS says lingering showers through the day will contribute to the slow drainage of areas that remain flooded. Areas with flooding include ag areas and roadways in the Pajaro and Salinas Valleys.

The NWS urges people to allow extra time on the roads and if water covers the roadway do not cross it, flood waters are usually deeper than they appear.

Smith Grade at Warren (tree on phone wires and small slide)
Soquel San Jose road PM 8.44 Near Address 25529 (tree down across wires)

UPDATE 12/11/14 10:45p.m.: FLASH FLOOD WARNING for southwestern Monterey County through 4:45a.m. including Gorda, Plaskett, and Pacific Valley. FLASH FLOOD WARNING for west central Monterey County through 11:45p.m. including Big Sur coast and Santa Lucia Range from Garrapata State Park to Limekiln State Park.

UPDATE 12/11/14 4:05p.m.: The National Weather Service has extended the flash flood warning for west central Monterey County through 5:30pm. The warning includes Big Sur and the Pfeiffer burn scar. Several inches of rain have fallen in the last few hours. flash flooding, mud slides and debris flows are occurring or imminent in this area.

NWS has canceled the high wind warning for the central coast.

A flash flood watch is still in place for most of the central coast through late Thursday according to the National Weather Service.

Roads still closed in Monterey County:

Fern Caynon Road from Cypress Way to 124 Fern Canyon Road in Carmel Valley

Alisal Road from Hartnell to Salinas city limits.

Old Stage Road from Iverson to dairy in Salinas
Harrison Road from Sala to Russell Roads in Salinas
Sill Road from Kings Hall to Harrington Rd in Watsonville

UPDATE 12/11/14 3:40p.m.: Roads still closed in Santa Cruz County:

Pinetree Lane

Empire Grade near 7960 (tree on wires)

Ice Cream Grade South of Martin Road (tree on wires)
Nina Drive at 980 (tree on wires)
Redwood Lodge Road at 16217 (tree on phone wires)
Smith Grade at Warren (tree on phone wires and small slide)
Valley Drive at Plateau Drive (flooding)
Old San Jose Road (one lane closed between mile marker 6.0 and 6.5 due to a mud slide)

UPDATE 12/11/14 2:45p.m.: New flash flood warning for the Big Sur area until 4:00p.m. Very heavy rain is falling making flash flooding probable. There is also a potential for mudslides/debris flows in the area.
Another flash flood warning is in place for west central Monterey County until 5:30p.m. including portions of Big Sur, Posts, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and the Pfieffer Burn Scar.

The National Weather Service has also issued a flash flood warning for western Santa Cruz County including Swanton, Davenport, Boulder Creek and surrounding areas until about 4:00p.m.

Sill Rd in Watsonville is now closed from Kings Hall to Harrington Rds., due to flooding, Verde Dr re-opened in Salinas.

UPDATE 12/11/14 1:04p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for northwestern Monterey County until 2:45p.m. including the cities of Monterey, Seaside, Marina, Pacific Grove, Castroville, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Prunedale, Moss Landing, Elkhorn, Cooper, Nashua, Neponset, Blanco, East Garrison, Sand City, Del Monte Heights, Del Rey Oaks, Del Monte Forest, New Monterey, Carmel Highlands and surrounding areas.

UPDATE 12/11/14 12:14p.m.: Highway 101 southbound near Hollister is closed after a tree fell across all southbound lanes. Traffic is being diverted at Hwy 156 until CALTRANS can clear the tree off the highway.

UPDATE 12/11/14 11:43a.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Monterey and San Benito Counties until 10:00p.m. Thursday night. A high wind warning means that a hazardous high wind event is expected of occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40mph or gusts of 58mph or more can lead to property damage.

UPDATE 12/11/14 11:34a.m.: The National Weather Service has issues a flash flood warning for central eastern Santa Cruz and southern Santa Clara counties until 1:45p.m. including the cities of Watsonville, Morgan hill, Gilroy, San Martin, Corralitos and nearby areas.

This earlier issued flash flood warning is still in effect until 12:15p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for much of Santa Cruz County, including the cities of Santa Cruz, Capitola, Aptos, Felton, Scotts Valley, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, and Davenport.

UPDATE 12/11/14 11:22a.m.: California State Parks Department has closed the following parks on the central coast due to the storm:

Santa Cruz County

Big Basin Redwoods State Park, New Brighton State Beach, Seacliff State Beach, and Sunset State Beach have been closed, and are expected to remain closed through next Wednesday December 16.

Reservations are being cancelled and refunds will be issued.

Monterey County

Carmel River State Beach, Julia Pfieffer Burns State Park and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve will close Thursday and Friday.

Coastal Trail at Asilomar State Beach, closed until further notice.

Stevenson Garden within Monterey State Historic Park, closed until further notice.

UPDATE 12/11/14 10:31a.m.: CALFIRE has closed Empire Grade Rd at Waldorf School, and Felton Empire Rd at Hwy 9 for the foreseeable future because of worsening conditions on the roadways.

Verde Dr is closed from Lakeview Dr. to the end in Salinas because of a downed tree.

A tree has fallen on a house on Skyline Drive in Monterey, people inside are ok, extensive damage to the house.

UPDATE: 12/11/14 10:10a.m.: Both north and southbound lanes of Highway 1 at Carpenter St in Carmel are closed as crews try to stabilize an area along the hillside that may slide. CALTRANS crews say a tree is about to fall and rocks could be sliding, eventually blocking the highway.

Prunedale North Rd from San Miguel Canyon Rd. to Hwy 156 is closed because of a downed tree.

Holman Highway is cleared of one tree, but another has just fallen just east of 17 mile Drive.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for much of Santa Cruz County, including the cities of Santa Cruz, Capitola, Aptos, Felton, Scotts Valley, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, and Davenport until 12:15p.m.

Significant flash flooding is possible as heavy rainfall moves into the area. Watsonville is not included in the warning at this time but remains under a Flash Flood Watch.

Downed trees and power outages are being seen across the Central Coast as a storm approaches the area.

Work crews were seen clearing up a downed near Constitution Blvd. and Manchester Drive in North Salinas Thursday morning. Locals reported another downed tree inside a Harden Parkway apartment complex.

Meanwhile, PG&E crews are responding to several power outages across our area including, Santa Cruz, Salinas, Watsonville and Monterey.

A tree blocked Holman Highway in both directions between Morse Rd and Skyline Forest around 9:00a.m.

CHP officials are also issuing warnings to drivers because of the dangerous conditions. They’re asking drivers to slow down on the road, leave early to get to their destination and check their windshield wipers and headlights.
