CHP: Driver safety tips for wet weather

As heavy rain approaches, the California Highway Patrol offers the following safety tips for drivers.

Slow down:

A vehicle cannot slow down as fast or turn as accurately on wet pavement.

Plan ahead:

Give your self plenty of time to get to your destination and leave ample distance between your vehicle and the one ahead.

Windshield wipers:

Make sure they are in good condition and make sure your headlights are on anytime your windshield wipers are on, it’s the law.

Stay alert:

Stay alert for potential hydroplaning by applying brakes slowly and maintain proper following distance.

High winds:

Use caution when driving in high winds as these can easily jostle vehicles of all sizes. Reducing speed will give better control of your vehicle.

Fog:

If your driving in fog keep your headlights on low beam and don’t stop on the roadway unless it’s an emergency. If that’s the case move away from the vehicle.

CHP advises everyone to check road conditions often by calling the California Department of Transportation Road Conditions hotline at 1800-427-7623.
