New signage honors Pacific Grove Chinese Fishing Village

A new interpretive panel recognizing the Pacific Grove Chinese Fishing Village has been installed along the recreation trail between Hopkins Marine Station and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

A dedication ceremony was held Saturday for the panel, which features three historic photos and detailed information about the location.

The spot used to be one of the largest Chinese fishing villages on the west coast, and from 1853-1906, it was the region’s Chinese cultural capital. The villagers created Monterey Bay’s first commercial fishing industry, shiipping dried fish products to San Francisco and China.

The village burned down suspiciously in 1906, dispersing the residents, who were not allowed to rebuild their homes, according to local historians.
