Diver dies after being rescued by training crews at Monastery Beach

Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies say a Modesto woman drowned while scuba diving at Monastery Beach in Carmel Wednesday.

The coroner identified the victim as 26-year-old Melissa Quaresma.

It happened as CALFIRE and several other agencies conducted quarterly training for swimmer recovery when it happened. They pulled the woman and her dive partner to safety. Her dive partner didn’t sustain any injuries.

Emergency crews at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula tried reviving her but were unsuccessful.
