Salinas businesses warned of fire inspector imposter

A man is visiting various businesses throughout Salinas indicating he is conducting a fire inspection, but instead will scam the unsuspecting owners out of money, according to the Old Town Salinas Association.

The individual has an ID card that displays the name “District Fire & Safety”, Tech 21, Frank Martinez, certified contractor. The person walks through the business and then sometime later bills them for $400+ dollars for the inspection.

The association said a local business was just targeted Monday morning. It’s a scam all throughout California. The association said the photograph on the ID card appears to be a heavy set Hispanic male.

The City of Salinas does not contract with private fire inspectors.

If you or someone you know comes in contact with such an individual or suspects this scam is occurring, please contact the Salinas Police Department at 758-7321, or 1-800-782-7463 (Anonymous CRIME Tip Line).
