SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter said it has an overload of cats and kittens, so it is holding an adoption special to help find them homes and fund programs and services.

As part of the "Pay it Forward" special, the adoption price for all cats and kittens will be reduced to $25 starting Friday and through Nov. 30.

The fee includes spay/neuter, a microchip with registration, vaccinations, routine flea and worm treatment, a cat carrier and a free wellness exam with participating veterinarians.

The other part of the special is asking the community to pay it forward by donating at least $25 to one of its funds. They include:

  • Planned Pethood Fund: Free spay and neuter surgeries.
  • Extra Mile Fund: Medical rehabilitation for animals beyond what the budget allows.
  • Healthy Pets for All Fund: Buys food, toys, flea medication and other supplies for underserved animals in the community.
  • General Program Donation Fund: Supports adoption, enrichment and public outreach and education programs.
