Fire crews clean up Salinas structure fire near homeless camp

SALINAS, Calif. (KION) The Salinas Fire Department is cleaning up after a fire damaged a building near a homeless camp.

The fire broke out near a building on North Main Street at East Market Street just before 2:40 p.m., and dozens of firefighters responded to stop it.

The fire department says it appears a homeless camp sparked the fire that spread into the building.

"Appears to be a homeless encampment that was set up against the side of the building. For some reason, the homeless encampment caught fire. We’re still investigating that point," said Acting Battalion Chief Cary Lesch.

Fire crews do not know if the building is abandoned. They will make sure the fire is completely extinguished before turning it over to the building owners.
