UPDATE 5/13/2020 1 p.m. California State University, Monterey Bay President Eduardo M. Ochoa confirmed in a statement that the majority of Fall 2020 classes will continue to be held online.

Ochoa said there will be some exceptions for activities that cannot be done virtually and are essential to the university's core mission.

In the statement, Ochoa said more details about excepted activities, student services, housing and athletic programs will be released by Monday.

"Students are encouraged to stay engaged and enrolled in their programs of study as this will maintain their
student status and continue to assure those degree requirements remain the same. Students that remain
enrolled and in good standing will be best able to progress unimpeded toward the timely completion of their
degrees," Ochoa said.

CSU Chancellor Timothy White announced at a Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday that the majority of classes at all campuses would be held virtually.

A UC spokesperson told the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles that they do not expect any of its campuses to reopen fully for in-person classes by the fall semester.

UPDATE 5/12/2020 2:30 p.m. Both the California State University and University of California systems are expected to hold most of their Fall 2020 classes online, according to school officials.

CSU Chancellor Timothy White said the majority of classes would be held virtually at a Board of Trustees meeting, but said there will be exceptions for activities that cannot be done virtually.

A UC spokesperson told the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles that they do not expect any of its campuses to reopen fully for in-person classes by the fall semester.

“We will be exploring a mixed approach with some material delivered in classroom and lab settings while other classes will continue to be online," UC spokesman Stett Holbrook told CBS LA.

White expressed concerns that there will be another wave of COVID-19 and that it may not be possible for some students to safely travel to campus.

PREVIOUS STORY: California State University Chancellor Timothy White said at a Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday that the majority of Fall 2020 classes throughout the system will be held virtually.

White said there will be exceptions, including for activities that cannot be held virtually.

He said the school system will continue to hold classes in that format because of the possibility of another wave of COVID-19 and because it may not be possible for some to safely to travel to campus.

CSU campuses switched to distance learning as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in March.

This is a developing story.
