Traffic collision Friday leaves one woman dead

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Monterey Police announced Monday that the traffic collision at Del Monte Avenue and Calle Principal on Friday around 8 p.m., resulted in a pedestrian's death.

According to police, a pick-up truck collided with a woman walking in the crosswalk. They say that the woman has been identified as Kathryn Hong, 65, from Bloomington, Minn.

After the accident, police say that the Monterey Fire Department provided medical assistance to Hong until an AMR ambulance arrived and transported her to the Natividad Medical Center. Hong suffered major injuries, according to the police, which she later succumbed to.

During the investigation, police learned that the driver of the truck, Jairo Cardenes Perez, 23, of Salinas, was uninjured. They say that after his vehicle struck Hong, Cardenes Perez immediately stopped and remained on scene.

Monterey Police do not believe that Cardenes Perez was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The Monterey County District Attorney's Office will be taking over investigation of the case and reviewing the incident for potential criminal filing of charges.

They ask that anyone with information regarding the collision to contact Sergeant Greg Galin at 831-646-3872 or galin@monterey.gov.
