The National Weather Service in San Francisco has announced that Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey counties will be under a Red Flag Warning between 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.

The move comes on the heels of PG&E briefly shutting off power to approximately 220,000 customers Friday night through rotating outages in select California counties. They were directed to do so after The California Independent System Operator issued a Stage 3 emergency.

The outages were to help relieve the strain on the power grid during the statewide heatwave. PG&E says this "directive was issued due to a lack of adequate energy supply statewide” and was issued to other utility companies around the state.

CORRECTION: An earlier article incorrectly referred to the rotating outages as "public safety power outages."

CAISO also issued a Grid Warning Notice on Saturday and may require PG&E to conduct additional rotating outages. A final decision has not been made. PG&E says they would be one to two hours in duration between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.  No customers are expected to be impacted overnight.
