Fireworks after 10 p.m. banned in Seaside, talks for future total ban in the works

All fireworks, even the "safe and sane" kind, are no longer allowed to be set off in Seaside any night after 10 p.m.

The City Council voted unanimously for the "urgency ordinance" Monday night, with the council addressing growing fireworks complaints. In the report ahead of Monday's meeting, the COVID-19 pandemic is being blamed for increased fireworks use, writing "more people are staying at home and the incidence of fireworks sounds and community disturbance have up-ticked during the month of June, 2020 as compared to 2019."

The Safe and Sane fireworks are currently only allowed to be sold and used during the period of June 28 to July 5. Aside from the new 10 p.m. restriction, there are talks of an outright ban on all fireworks.

Mayor Pro Tem Dave Pacheco brought up the possibility of discussing a total fireworks ban at the council meeting on July 16. Council member Jon Wizard says this could also be decided through a ballot measure for Seaside residents in November.

Aside from the post-10 p.m. ban, the newly passed urgency ordinance requires city permitted safe and sane fireworks booths to distribute information on the new rules. The city is also setting up an online complaint/declaration form for people to assist with fireworks enforcement. The program includes a $50 cash payment for successful citations.
