The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office currently investigating suspicious activity in Pebble Beach; Monterey Sheriffs

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Tuesday morning people in the area of Pebble Beach received an alert on their cell phones that said there was an active shooter in the area and to shelter in place.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office later confirmed that there was, in fact, no active shooter in the area but that a strange incident did occur Tuesday morning at Pebble Beach.

They said that a woman reported being followed while on a walk by a "suspicious" man. She also told sheriffs that there was another woman that the victim did not know also on a walk and she warned that woman that she thought she was being followed, but said woman continued walking.

Sheriffs said that they have not found that second woman in the area.

The victim told deputies that after she stopped her walk to allow the man to pass her, he revealed a handgun. They said that he then approached her and tied her to a tree.

Deputies say that this occurred around 7:30 a.m. and the incident was called in at 9:30 a.m. They said that two individual witnesses who do not know each other came across the woman tied to the tree and then untied her.

The sheriff's office also says that they are still looking for the male suspect, and that he has a unique tattoo. He is described as a hispanic male.
